After I
interviewed Joe Li about his art work “Goals”, there is no reason for me not to
choose his art work due to its meaningfulness. Joe reflects the reality of life
in his work. Goals are important for everyone. Sadly, with the fast pace and
stressful living tempo in Hong Kong, how many Hongkongers can make their
initial goals or dreams come true? They devote their lifetime to study, earn a
living, buy a house, form a family…Can they achieve the level of
self-actualization in their life? That is exactly what the message Joe wants to
express through his work. Personally, I want to point out what I like most is
the “disconnection” between the two parts. The second are

I also like this art work very much. I think this work express the feeling of lots of Hong Kong people. It is really true. However by looking at your interview, the artist hopes that he can reach his goal and he seems happy doing his work. So, why the tree is without leaf? I am not sure but I think when he is pursuing his dream, his life is still fruitful, isn’t he? And the artist said that he hope that his work can encourage the next generation to achieve their goal, but why his work provide a negative image to achieving goal? Is that he thinks that although goal is hard to achieve, we still have to have a goal? Anyway, I think it is interesting to look at this meaningful and beautiful work.

I agree with Nancy’s comment, because I also think that the art work somehow shows us what the real life is.
回覆刪除I love this art work and its idea very much. Actually, I think it can reflect the reality and inspire many Hongkongers. It seems that the tree contains different stages of our lifetime. To own a house is most of the Hongkongers’ dream. In my point of view, the ladder seems to represent the effort we made throughout our lives. The effort we made connects us with our goals. I like the nest too. The two eggs in the nest represent our next generation. It is happy to have children after having a house with our beloved one.
I think we can interpret the ‘disconnection’ between the two parts of the art work in our own way. I interpret it in a positive way, although there is no ladder linking the two parts, there is a person who is climbing on the ladder in the upper part. It shows that there is still a hope to pursue our goals and dreams.

After watching lots of Joe Li‘s work, I found that each of his work have a story behind, and most of them are talking “love”. The material he use is not unique, such as metal, glass, wood, however, I am most appreciate the way he handle the material - he fire the metal and then the chemical process- oxidization would make the metal become different color. I also like the work chosen by you – “goal” It seems that Joe Li put the epitome of the nature into his work. I very appreciate that he can imitate the nature in a perfect way. But I have a question that what are those squares above the installations? Are they representing the goal?

For the artwork “Goals”, there is a house in the middle of the tree and two ladders, which links the house to the ground and the top of the tree respectively. At the top of the tree, there is a nest with two eggs. I think that the eggs in the nest might reflect some fulfillment we want to achieve in our minds. It can be different because everybody has their own dream and this is the “goal”. The house is a place where we live, which means the basic needs on our daily lives. People are climbing from the bottom of the trees to the top. In order to earn a living, many people climb to the middle of the tree where there is a house to provide our basic needs. However, few of them can persist in climbing to the top of the tree where it is the real dream we want to achieve. One thing very interesting is that there is no route can let people directly climb from the bottom of the tree to the top of the tree, which means we need to fulfill the basic requirements of the daily lives first in order to get the goal we want.
The “Goal” sculpture is really a very instructive and local piece of work. I think Joe can truly express how the life of Hong Kong people is and I agree with Nancy’s focuses on the disconnection between the two ladders. Many Hong Kong people nowadays cannot reach the highest level reflected by the artwork – to have their own family and nurture the next generation. I think that Joe has conceived the idea of having ladder to represent the path to different levels as he think that climbing such steep ladder is not an easy job and it would be a tough and tiring road to reach one’s goal. The whole piece of work may be a positive expression of life but indeed, I think Joe wants to show the toughness of life as represented by the long and steep ladder and the disconnection.
